Composites Optimisation: Ply-stack OptimisationProblem:Software for the optimisation of laminate stacking sequence, taking into account manufacturing constraints, is not commercially available. Considerable effort to reach an optimised solution is therefore required. Approach:A software tool that interfaced with common finite element software required development. Solution:A Windows® based optimisation software package was developed which uses genetic optimisation algorithms in conjunction with multiple constraints, most of them user defined, to produce optimum composite layup for a multi-zone parts. The optimised design satisfies minimum strain and buckling criteria for multiple load cases. Validation was performed on various problems and verified in an industrial design office. Outcome:The developed software was licensed for use in an aircraft design office, integrating successfully with other design tools and increasing the speed of product development.
