Problem:
Hawker de Havilland (HdH), now Boeing Aerostructures Australia, was a Tier 2 supplier of composite aircraft components to Boeing. It was traditionally a facility using conventional prepreg hand lay-up and autoclave curing procedures. Its ambition was to become a Tier 1 supplier (i.e. design, analyse and build).

Problem:
The Specialty Group (located in Moorabbin, Australia) approached CRC-ACS with a plan to manufacture prepregs. At the time no prepregs were manufactured in Australia.

Fireshield Surfacing Veil
Background:
A fire retardant surfacing veil was developed by CRC-ACS as a novel solution to improve fire performance in pultruded product. Regina Glass Fibre & Tissue, a manufacturer of glass fibre tissue, was identified as having the potential to commercialise the technology.
